Slack is the amount of breathing room a project task has in the schedule. If a task has three days of slack, it can slip by up to three days without affecting the project deadline or another important activity.
For example, take a website project. A designer is scheduled to finish a website layout on Monday. But the developer doesn't need it until Wednesday. That two-day gap is the slack. The designer could finish on Tuesday instead of Monday without delaying the developer's work or affecting the project schedule.
But Slack isn't just extra time added to a task. It's the amount of time a task can move within the schedule without causing problems elsewhere. The available slack depends on the task's timing, duration, dependencies, and project deadlines.

For example, a task may have five days of total slack but only two days of free slack. This means the task can be delayed by two days without affecting the next task. It can be delayed for up to five days before it affects the project deadline.
Slack vs Schedule Buffer
Slack and buffer aren't the same thing. Project managers add buffers as insurance.
Slack comes from schedule calculations. A buffer is time deliberately added to protect against uncertainty or delays. You can't assume that every gap in a schedule represents a planned buffer.

What Is the Difference Between Slack and Float?
What is slack or float in project management? Slack and float are similar terms commonly used interchangeably in project scheduling. American project managers tend to say slack. British and European practitioners often say float. Hence, software like Microsoft Project and Primavera use both terms interchangeably in their reports

How to Calculate Slack in Project Management
Slack calculations use activity dates and relationships. The process becomes much easier when you work through the schedule in a fixed order.
Step 1: Map Activities and Dependencies
List every activity, its duration, and its predecessor relationships. You need these relationships before calculating schedule dates.
A dependency matters because one activity may not start until another finishes. If those relationships are wrong, the slack calculation won't tell you much.
Step 2: Perform the Forward Pass
The forward pass calculates each activity's earliest possible start and finish.
For an activity with a duration of five days, its early finish is based on its early start plus the activity duration. When several predecessors exist, the schedule must account for the one that finishes latest.
Step 3: Perform the Backward Pass
The backward pass works from the planned project finish toward the beginning. It determines the latest dates activities can start and finish without affecting the required completion date.
The calculation uses the schedule constraints and activity relationships.
Step 4: Calculate Total Slack
A common formula is:
Total Slack = Late Start − Early Start
You can also calculate it as:
Total Slack = Late Finish − Early Finish
If both calculations produce the same result, you've got a useful check on your work.
Calculate Free Slack
Free slack measures how much an activity can move without delaying the earliest start of its successor.
A simple formula is:
Free Slack = Earliest Successor Start − Earliest Activity Finish
For activities with multiple successors, the earliest successor date matters. That's one reason dependency mapping must be accurate.

The value of slack tells you something about the health and flexibility of the schedule.

Zero slack means an activity has no available total float under the current schedule. A delay can affect the project completion date or another imposed constraint.

What Does Positive Slack Mean?
Positive slack means an activity has some scheduling flexibility. A manager might have room to shift the activity without changing the planned completion date.
